Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America and TomTom combine Hardware, Software and Maps for Precision Navigation for Autonomous Driving

Mitsubishi Electric’s High-Definition Locator and TomTom’s High-Definition Maps provide automakers with precision integrated navigation solution next-generation vehicles
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN and AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – January 8, 2024 – Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America and TomTom (XAMS: TOM2), a leading location technology specialist, today announced the integration of technologies for precision navigation for the next generation of autonomous vehicles.
TomTom’s High Definition (HD) Map technology running on Mitsubishi Electric’s High-Definition Locator hardware provides the highly accurate navigation data required for automated driving.
“We’re exhilarated to work with TomTom, widely recognized as the leading provider of precise and reliable mapping data, to further enhance our positioning systems” said Michael Horani, director of Advanced Development for Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, Inc.
Mitsubishi Electric’s High-Definition Locator is a highly precise vehicle positioning system by its own positioning algorithm that utilize global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU). Coupled with high-definition mapping, such as TomTom’s HD Map, the system provides accurate information on the vehicle’s position and road data critical for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) applications.
TomTom leverages a multi-sourcing strategy for its HD Map technology, including GPS, front-facing cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence, to allow automated driving systems to not only ‘see’ the road ahead but anticipate it. Already used in Levels 1 and 2 autonomous driving, TomTom’s HD Maps are consistently updated, provide a highly detailed representation of the road, and can pin-point the location of all road elements, including lane centerlines, traffic signs and other objects to help self-driving vehicles make sense of the surroundings.
“TomTom HD Maps help vehicles plan a path and safely travel along any route, making all necessary adjustments, including changing lanes, taking exits and merging into highway traffic, which is required for Level 2-Plus and Level 3 autonomous driving.” Said Paul Hesen, vice president of Product Management at TomTom.
During CES 2024, TomTom will demonstrate recorded video from a vehicle equipped with Mitsubishi Electric’s High-Definition Locator hardware and TomTom HD Maps, as it traveled metro Detroit roads and highways. TomTom’s demo will take place Jan. 9-12, 2024, at Booth #W311/W312 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
