What constitutes a diversity supplier?
The National Minority Supplier Development Council, Inc. defines
a minority supplier as: |
|
Asian-Indian |
|
A US citizen whose origins are from India,
Pakistan or Bangladesh. |
|
Asian-Pacific |
|
A US citizen whose origins are from Japan, China,
Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Samoa, Guam,
the US Trust Territories of the Pacific or the Northern
Marianas. |
|
Black |
|
A US citizen having origins in any of the Black
racial groups of Africa |
|
Hispanic |
|
A US citizen of true-born Hispanic heritage, from
any of the Spanish-speaking areas of Latin America or the following
regions: Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean
Basin only. |

Native American |
|
A person who is an American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut
or Native Hawaiian, and regarded as such by the community of which
the person claims to be a part. Native Americans must be documented
members of a North American tribe, band or otherwise organized group
of native people who are indigenous to the continental United states
and proof can be provided through a Native American Blood Degree
Certificate (i.e., tribal registry letter tribal roll register
number.) |

The National Minority Business Development Council (NMBDC) defines
a minority-owned business as:
A sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation of which a
minimum of 51% is owned by minority persons. In the case of a
proprietorship, the minority owners must be engaged in the daily
management, control, and operation of the business concern. In the case
of a corporation, the minority stockholders must be in control of the
management and daily business operations, and a majority of the Board of
Directors must be minority group members.
Women-Owned Business
A "women owned firm" must have 51% ownership by a woman or women and
proof of effective management of the business. This means having an
operating position, hire-fire, and other decision-making roles. The
firm must have bylaws. The woman or women must have control of the
business as evidenced by signature role on loans, contracts, and leases.
The woman or women must have US citizenship or have US Resident
Alien Status.
Sheltered Workshop
Unless a different meaning is plainly required by the context,
"sheltered workshop" means a rehabilitation facility, or that part of
a rehabilitation facility operated by a nonprofit corporation, where any
manufacture or handiwork is carried on and operated for the primary
purpose of: (a) Providing gainful employment or rehabilitation services
to the handicapped as an interim step in the rehabilitation process for
those who cannot be readily absorbed in the competitive labor market or
during such time as employment opportunities for them in the competitive
labor market do not exist; or (b) providing evaluation and work adjustment
services for handicapped individuals. |
