What constitutes a diversity supplier?

The National Minority Supplier Development Council, Inc. defines a minority supplier as:

Asian-Indian

A US citizen whose origins are from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Asian-Pacific

A US citizen whose origins are from Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Samoa, Guam, the US Trust Territories of the Pacific or the Northern Marianas.

Black

A US citizen having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa

Hispanic

A US citizen of true-born Hispanic heritage, from any of the Spanish-speaking areas of Latin America or the following regions: Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean Basin only.

A person who is an American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut or Native Hawaiian, and regarded as such by the community of which the person claims to be a part. Native Americans must be documented members of a North American tribe, band or otherwise organized group of native people who are indigenous to the continental United states and proof can be provided through a Native American Blood Degree Certificate (i.e., tribal registry letter tribal roll register number.)

The National Minority Business Development Council (NMBDC) defines a minority-owned business as:

A sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation of which a minimum of 51% is owned by minority persons. In the case of a proprietorship, the minority owners must be engaged in the daily management, control, and operation of the business concern. In the case of a corporation, the minority stockholders must be in control of the management and daily business operations, and a majority of the Board of Directors must be minority group members.

Women-Owned Business

A "women owned firm" must have 51% ownership by a woman or women and proof of effective management of the business. This means having an operating position, hire-fire, and other decision-making roles. The firm must have bylaws. The woman or women must have control of the business as evidenced by signature role on loans, contracts, and leases. The woman or women must have US citizenship or have US Resident Alien Status.

Sheltered Workshop

Unless a different meaning is plainly required by the context, "sheltered workshop" means a rehabilitation facility, or that part of a rehabilitation facility operated by a nonprofit corporation, where any manufacture or handiwork is carried on and operated for the primary purpose of: (a) Providing gainful employment or rehabilitation services to the handicapped as an interim step in the rehabilitation process for those who cannot be readily absorbed in the competitive labor market or during such time as employment opportunities for them in the competitive labor market do not exist; or (b) providing evaluation and work adjustment services for handicapped individuals.
